Called the Great Council of 101 AC. Its lords chose Viserys over Rhaenys, establishing on screen that a male claim outranks a female one. That is the precedent both sides argue over for the rest of the series.

The longest-reigning Targaryen king. He outlived two named heirs and left the succession to a vote of the realm rather than settle it himself. Every claim in the Dance traces back through him.
